Manual scavenging - Dr Bindeshwar Pathak ( Hindi)

Manual Scavenging is the practice of picking up of animal and human excreta from dry lavatories using hand. This programme is based on the plight of manual scavenger. Speaking to OneWorld South Asia Dr Bindeshwar Pathak said that the construction of toilets would help in ending the practice of manual scavenging and open defecation.

The highest number of scavengers is in Uttar Pradesh, then in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. About 2.3 million dalits are practicing it and out of which 82% are women. People encouraging this practice are punished with an imprisonment of up to an year and with a fine of Rs.2,000.

This programme is based on the journey of India's landmark Right of children to Free and Compulsory Education Act. The Right to Education came into effect on 1st April 2012 and provides for free and compulsory education to all children of the age of six to fourteen years. In this episode of Ek Duniya Ek Awaaz, we speak to Mrs. Sushma Berlia, President of Apeejay Stya who analyses the performance of this act in last years. She describes quality of education as an area of concern and is hopeful that the Public Private Partnerships can provide impetus to the act.

This episode of Ek Duniya Ek Awaaz talks about the status of education in India. When it comes to state of education various reports by UN agencies and other suggest lack of teachers, text books and infrastructure in schools. A study conducted by ASER suggests that the learning levels among students have gone down, it shows that the students of class 5th are not able to solve a simple arithmetic and read out poems in Hindi. To solve this problem, Indian government is running various schemes and enacted Right to Education Act in 2010.
