The problem of waste management has grown to alarming proportions in the city of Kollam. The waste recycling plant erected at Kureepuzha, a sub-urban village, has helped only to aggravate the problem as a huge hill of disintegrating waste materials poses a serious threat to the lives of people living there. A new habit of people dumping waste on the roadsides, sewage and water canals is another problem. Radio Benziger addressed this issue by initiating public discussions, seminars and public meetings and a painting competition for children. This programme is based on the opinions and observations of the people. The need to destroy waste, its source, and reduce or avoid the use of plastic materials are emphasized.

Pachauri, Director-General of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) speaks to OneWorld and explains the meaning of term 'global commons' and the significance of protecting them. "The air that we breathe is the commons. It is something that does not belong to anybody but has deep effect on everybody’s existence", says Dr. Pachauri.
