In Sri Lanka, abortion is an illegal practice. The only exception is when there’s a threat to the mother’s life. Despite the 150 years old law on abortion more than 1,000 cases of illegal abortions take place everyday. Unsafe methods used in illegal abortion poses a serious threat on the mother’s life. Our legislative system has not taken into consideration the plight of rape and child abuse victims.

90% of women migrant workers work in the Middle East. They are the biggest earners of revenue in Sri Lanka. Despite their services they experience harrowing accounts of physical, psychological and sexual abuse. Let us make sure that their rights are safeguarded too.

In all religious activities it is the woman who takes the primary responsibility, be it in a religious institution or in a home. It is she who imparts the religious teachings on to her children and to generations to come. Despite her involvement, she is considered secondary to her male counterpart in all religious matters. Where is the equality in this?

මාධ්‍ය තුළින් කාන්තා දියුණුවට දැනුවත් වීමට ඇති ඉඩ කඩ

Most women's magazines, newspapers, radio and TV programs teach women about cooking, sewing, beauty culture, bridal dressing etc. Very few women’s programs and articles teach women the importance of developing their knowledge, their legal rights and their responsibilities at work and towards the country. Should we not build a feminist literature that educates a women mind?

ඉන්න හිටින්නට ගෙයක් දොරක් නැතිව අසරණ වූ අවතැන් වූ අපේම ජනතාව ‍වෙනුවෙන්

It is our responsibility to re-settle the thousands of families displaced by war and destruction. Let us make sure to give them permanent and safe housing so that they too are entitled to a secure tomorrow.     

The use of the internet and misuse mobile phone technology has re-defined the way we communicate and form social networks. Yet, these very same devices have been used to exploit and objectify women in the most perverse and degrading way. Let us ensure that the rights of women and young girls are safeguarded by being responsible and intelligent users of technology.

The war in our country is widely discussed by every person in the country. But in these discussions, the issue of widowhood is almost non - existent. Thousands of women widowed by war experience a number of economic social and familial burdens. Moreover, they have become the innocent victims of male predators whose only intention is to exploit them financially and sexually. Where’s the justice in this?

In most urban parking areas women work as parking attendants. For a meager pay, these women work in tough conditions often having to spend hours outside in the sun. But despite their services, the gratitude they get in return is in the form of verbal abuse and harassments by vehicle owners. What we should keep in mind is that they too are trying to earn a living in any way possible. Don’t they deserve to be treated as humans too?

වැඩ කරන කාන්තාවන් සදහා නීතිමය පනත්

Labour rights for women should not be limited to mere words in a legal clause. They should be strictly enforced to ensure that the rights of all women workers are not violated. At a time when the labour rights of women workers are exploited, isn’t it our responsibility to provide the adequate safety measures that they need to safeguard the rights they deserve?

Age old popular sayings about women fails to capture the efficiency with which their work is carried out in the household. The very basis of modern physics, chemistry, biology and medicine were founded right in our own homes by our mothers and wives.
