Mission & Vission

<p>To establish an on-going dialogue with rural communities through the traditional media of puppetry street plays and songs.</p>

Genesis

<p>Barefoot Collegehas been involved in community-managed and controlled initiatives in the area of education, health, drinking water, solar energy, rural women&rsquo;s development, training, environmental regeneration, Right to Information, National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, minimum wages and the physically challenged.</p> <p><br />The idea behind the Community Radio was from senior journalist, Ajit Bhattacharya who, during a visit to Tilonia suggested exploring possibilities of working in the area of Community Radio since it has an on-going dialogue with poorest of the poor in rural communities.</p>

Thematic Focus

Tilonia Radio @90.4 MHz broadcasts its programmes for six hours daily between 7:00 am – 9:00 am; 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Name of the Programme Format Description
Education Education Programme and Youth Parliament Spread awareness about education amongst rural communities. This is a unique programme focusing on citizen empowerment.
Health Interviews and Puppet shows Spread awareness about the health schemes and benefits offered to the people
Water and Environment Interviews, Street Plays Spread awareness about Rain Water Harvesting and protection of the ecology as well as environment
MGNREGA and RTI Interviews, Awareness Songs and Plays Spread awareness about the Right to Information Act and Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
Women’s and Children Interviews, Discussions The issues are raised by the women and children.

Programme

<p>Signature Programme: Kabad-se-Jugad, Balsevika Community Participation: The Community Radio team conducts talks with different people at the village level and the process engages collective sharing of solutions to common problems people in the community face. Peoples representative get to address their problems to experienced government and non-governmental officials through the radio and this is also very helpful.</p>

Impact & Stories

<p>Interviews were conducted at NREGA sites in May 2012 and the audience were able to listen to their reactions live. They were interested in listening on the phone about their reaction.<br />The workers sought to discuss the change in the timings of NREGA in some work sites including Tilonia and Chundri. After listening to workers, the government officials changed the work timings to6.00 in the morning up to 10.00 am.<br />By listening to programmes over radio, the workers were also able to know the minimum wage that they are entitled to.<br />Similarly, after obtaining information from the radio, many villages started applying for old age pension and they were able to access the facilities due to them. Many villagers have since got their applications processed. One of the cases worth mentioning is of a visually-challenged village elder whose application for old-age pension was processed.<br />The Community Radio Station has also highlighted the existence of labour cards which resulted in many workers contacting the Community Radiousing their mobile phones. As a result, their applications for labour cards are now being processed.</p>
