Periyar CR

<p>The vision is of community engagement and service, advancing strategic goals, defining station role in community, impactingthe community and increasing community awareness.</p> <p>The mission includes becoming anacademic laboratory, making programmes consistent with professional standardsand meeting the needs of the community licences.</p>

<p>The government introduced PURA scheme (ProvidingUrban Amenities in Rural Areas) and Community Radio was a tool that came to mind for development of poorpeople. One of the practical PURAmodel is the Periyar PURA that encompasses58 villages of Thanjavur district and eightvillages of Pudukkottaidistrict. These villages encircle the institution at a radialdistance of 22 km.</p>

Periyar Community Radio @90.4 MHz broadcasts its programmes for six hours from 8:30 am – 1:00 pm and 4:30 – 6:30 pm.

Namathu Samuthayam Drama, Quiz, Songs, Cultural activity, Speech, Training Focus on various topics like renewable energy, motivate and train them to become an entrepreneur, eradicate poverty and inculcate scientific temper.

<p>Signature Programmes: Thinnamoruseithi,UnarnthomUzhavai, PagutharivuPinjugal. NammathuSamuthayam, UnnalMudiyumPennae,Nallavalzvu. Community Participation: Conducting seminars and workshops to motivate the participants and give tokens of appreciation such as certificates and prizes. Innovations in Format: Conducting competitions for schoolchildren and need-based training programmes for village people.</p>

<p>Funding and Partnerships Initially PeriyarManiammai University allocated Rs 30 laks in 2006.Now the PeriyarManiammai University allocates Rs 3 lakh per year in their annual budget for the maintenance of PCR.</p>

<p>Periyar Community Radio worked with the Chennai-based Reach Foundation for disseminating messages regarding tuberculosis through 12 episodes.Apart from this we conducted an awareness programme in five villages on 26-30 Nov 2012. Around 73 members have benefited through this programme.</p> <p>Another series of 12 episodes was broadcast between May 2012 to July 2012 for eradicating drug use in partnership with the Victoria Drug Rescue Home. In that project 146 members benefited from this project as well.</p> <p>Periyar Community Radio alsobroadcast a series of 12 programmeson the theme of child rights, primary education, and protection from abuse, nutrition andhealth care, protection from exploitation, recreation and survival. PCR collaborated with Child Line Nodal Centre, SHED India organization, Central for Rural Development (CRD), NGOs, and Periyar Health Care Center (PHCC).</p>
