Apne Aap Women Worldwide(AAWW), founded in 2002 has emerged over the past 7 years as a world leading grassroots advocacy organization dedicated to the global battle against human trafficking and has provided support to more than 10,000 women and children trapped in, or at risk of being trafficked for prostitution in India. Apne Aap advocates self-help, self-organizing and self-empowerment to dismantle the system of sex-trafficking. It collectivizes victims to rescue and serve each other and ask for access to education, safe housing, legal protection and dignified and sustainable livelihoods as basic rights. It organizes victims to speak out against the severe injustice of their own situation and the demand for purchased sex.

Main objective of the position

To formulate and implement a communication strategy to create awareness about Apne Aap’s battle against human trafficking. To constantly scan the environment and stay abreast of developments in the economic, social and political arena in order to assess their impact on the communications strategy.

Key job responsibilities

  • To ensure effective organization branding/ communication (planning & implementation) through various channels
  • To plan and deliver Apne Aap’s newsletter called ‘Red Light Despatch’, working closely with survivors and victims, ensuring quality of content and presentation
  • To ensure updation of the website (working in coordination with the outsourced IT firm) to enable maximum outreach
  • To ensure a consistent external voice of the organization through various channels including web content, publications, newsletters etc.
  • To conceptualize/design and coordinate campaigns and online petitions.
  • To effectively use social marketing tools and other online forums for increasing awareness about issues related to trafficking and Apne Aap’s stance
  • To plan and implement various other initiatives, such as creation of Audio Visual Documentation –eg movie clips, short clips of activities, podcasts, in support of Apne Aap’s vision
  • To develop the team’s capabilities to ensure that objectives are met
  • To support in preparing the budget for the Communications function
  • Ensure that objectives are met within the budgeted amount.
  • Support the program team in identifying its key stakeholders developing and preparing communication material for liaison with other stakeholders.
  • Assisting in preparing program communication tools, collating information from the field offices and effectively sharing among the key stakeholders (Internal and external).
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with key members of the local/regional stakeholders ( community, government agencies, organizations, academia, media) as required
  • Organize and participate in multidisciplinary forums/ Conferences on Trafficking, which will invite various civil society movements to discuss key issues and hear from affected women
  • Develops partnerships with other organized groups in the community, as well as civil society organizations, to orient them on Apne Aaps progress and goals and to solicit their involvement.
  • To work in coordination with Technical specialist – Survivor Leadership to train field staff in conducting open Mike Sessions.

Education and experience

  • Desired- Post Graduate Degree / Diploma in Public Relations or Mass Communication
  • 4 -5 years of experience in communication field, preferably in development sector.
  • Experience in publishing newsletters and developing brochures.
  • Well versed with new Social Networking Websites such as Facebook, Twitter & You Tube etc.

Required competencies

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Hindi.
  • Proficient in the use of computers and MS Office.
  • Proven abilities in proposal writing, reporting & analysis.Good documentation capabilities.
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Keen interest in creative displays.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to travel to the field
  • Ability to understand and be sensitive to the complexities of working with vulnerable communities.
